Summer Hair Care Tips

Are you fed up with summer hair? Have you resorted to just living with the dreaded ponytail, or donning a big-brimmed hat, or something worse? You’re not alone. Sun, salt, and chlorine are all enemies of our hair, and we must defend ourselves. Here are our tips for keeping your hair happy all summer long.

Don’t Fry Your Hair

We’re not kidding. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can literally fry your hair shaft, cooking it from the inside out. If you’ve got color-treated hair, you may be very familiar with this problem. Does your color become brassy, fade very quickly, or get bleached-out in the summer? You may have been blaming it on the pool, but it could be the sun. Be sure that you start every day, not just every summer day, with styling products that contain UV protection. We’ve got a great selection here at the salon, but you can find them anywhere. And, that wide-brimmed hat we mentioned earlier, it really isn’t a bad idea. It’ll help protect your hair from the hottest mid-day sun. As an added bonus, it’ll also help protect your skin from sun damage.

Don’t Dry It Out

Your hair is probably already going to be extra dry. So, don’t do anything to add to the problem. If you can get away with it, skip washing your hair for an extra day. And, go easy on the blow dryer and hot styling tools. They’ll just add to the frizz and split ends. Summer is a great time to just air-dry and wear your hair in a natural style. Come winter, you’ll be glad you did.

Defend Against Chlorine

Don’t go into the pool with dry hair. It’ll soak up chlorine like a sponge. Get your head good and wet with clean, fresh water before diving in. And, always wash and condition your hair after swimming. If you leave chlorinated water on your hair and let it air dry, you’re asking for trouble. You already know this if you’ve got colored or bleached hair. Your color will be done for in no time if you spend too much time in the pool and don’t take the time to get the chlorine out.

Condition, Condition, Condition

We can’t stress enough how important this is in the summer. Even on the days you skip washing, it can’t hurt to condition, or even use a leave-in conditioning treatment. And, if you give your hair a good spritz of a natural, oil-based conditioner each summer evening, you’re sure to survive the summer with healthy, frizz-free, flowing locks.

Hydrate

We feel like everytime we give you advice, we’re telling you to hydrate. Well, that’s because it is so important. If you are healthier, your hair is healthier. And, if you spend the summer dehydrated, you’re going to be pretty bummed out by the sad, slow growth you may experience toward the end of the season, or even through the winter.
